Orthoptic tests
What each screen-delivered instrument measures, how it is administered, and how to read what it produces.
Motility
9 positions of gaze
Structured photographic record of eye position in the nine cardinal directions, for documenting and following an incomitant deviation.
Anti-saccades
Inhibition task. A distractor pulls gaze one way while the target appears opposite. Records accuracy and a mean response time.
Hess-Weiss
Dissociated nine-point motility plot for each eye. Reports an average deviation in prism dioptres and a breakdown per muscle.
Smooth pursuit
Moving target for observing smooth pursuit. Path, speed, size and shape are selectable. Tracking is judged by watching the eyes.
Accommodation
Screening
Amsler grid
Central field screening for metamorphopsia and scotoma within about ten degrees of fixation, tested one eye at a time.
Orthoptic maze
Maze tracing task that loads smooth pursuit and fixation stability with a visuomotor demand, used for screening and for training.
Word reading
Near reading task. Single words appear one at a time at a set speed, and the patient types each one back before it changes.
